5 Best Consumer Stocks To Own Right Now

It wasn too long ago that banks would do nearly anything to get your business and worked hard to keep it.  Imagine getting a toaster for opening an account! Oh boy, those were the days.

In the post-meltdown era, though, it doesn seem like banks want small-change business like checking accounts. At nearly every turn, they impose fees to try to boost their profits. For account holders, it incredibly annoying and costly.

The Pew Charitable Trusts recently released its fourth survey of checking account practices. While there been some progress on disclosing the worst account abuses, there are still plenty of ways banks are going to gouge you. Here what you need to know.

* Avoid Banks that eorder consumer withdrawals from high to low-dollar amount. This practice, according to the Pew Trusts, can boost overdraft fees. Nearly half of the banks surveyed do this.

A responsible bank should give you clear, understandable disclosure on all fees. If there gobbledygook in their disclosure statements, chances are you will get burned.

On Monday, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR  ) filed a trademark application for a soda maker that looks like it could compete with SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) . The Karbon trademark is set to be used for soda making and sparkling beverages, according to the company's filing. The success of Green Mountain's Keurig coffee brewers should give SodaStream pause, and perhaps a reason to re-evaluate the aggressiveness of its marketing.

Its been a rather eventful week for news from the marijuana sector and small cap marijuana stocks like GW Pharmaceuticals PLC (NASDAQ: GWPH), Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB) and Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) as one of these stocks gets endorsed by Morgan Stanley while another appears on CNBCmore signs of legitimacy for an investmentsector that full of pumps, dumps and other unsavory types of activities. Just consider the following small cap marijuana stock or pot industry news:

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

When Tranzbyte Corp. (OTCMKTS:ERBB) and Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX) both announced they would be unveiling vending machines to dispense medical marijuana and/or recreational marijuana, fans and supporters of hemp/pot applauded the ease of access, but even some of the most die-hard supporters saw potential problems. Although the machines made by MDBX and ERBB would only dispense marijuana if a strong verification procedure had been successfully performed, there was just something a little un-nerving about an un-manned metal box that - given the right hacking capabilities - could be fooled into giving marijuana to someone who shouldn't have it. Or barring that, the machines (which are admittedly solid and stout) could still be vandalized, broken, or even outright stolen if left unprotected. Those are long shots, granted, but thieves know few bounds.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Companies like Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Tranzbyte Corp. (OTCMKTS:ERBB), and Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT) were on the receiving end of another dose of good news on Thursday.... not that they necessarily needed it. That's when a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas was published, illustrating how not only did the advent of medical marijuana not increase crime, but rather, coincided with a (relative) decline in crime.
