Top 10 Communications Equipment Companies To Buy Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Back in June I told you that Ciena (CIEN), which at the time was trading at $19.79 per share, was meaningfully undervalued.

It wasn't a popular call. But although carrier spending had not fully rebounded, management still figured out ways to get revenue and free-cash-flow growth.

To that end, given Ciena's industry-leading position in optical telecommunications equipment, I felt there was (at least) 15% upside to be had in the stock regardless of whether the likes of Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) decided to spend.

Not to mention that Ciena was coming off consecutive quarters in which the company beat estimates and raised guidance. Since the June article, the stock has soared 22%, including a 52-week high of $24.61. And following yet another beat-and-raise quarter, there's no question that more gains are on the way. On many levels, the Ciena's turnaround is pretty remarkable. With the recent moves made by Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), questions were raised as to whether Ciena, which also competes with bigger rivals like Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper (JNPR), could ever survive the weak carrier-spending environment. [Read: Apple's iPhones Are Built for Collect Calls] Now, with revenue growing 14% year-over year and 19% sequentially, these concerns have been put to rest. Equally impressive, for the second consecutive quarter, Ciena showed tremendous growth in packet networking, which was up 23% year over year and a stunning 104% sequentially. Now, with virtually no one reporting on this performance, it still seems as if the Street is unwilling to give Ciena its proper credit. You can be unimpressed if you like. But let's not forget, that although Cisco did report a strong quarter several weeks ago, Cisco got hammered for issuing softer-than-expected guidance . So truth be told, although I was in the glass-half-full camp in the telecom sector, there were also reasons for caution heading into Ciena's report. Essentially, this performance, which also includes a 8% year-over-year improvement in non-GAAP gross margin, validates what I've been saying about the credibility that Ciena has earned. The fear of Cisco is always a concern, which is what has kept investors at bay.

    To the layperson, the 802.11ac standard means absolutely nothing, even if that individual is using that particular technology. As such, there's no apparent difference between the networking technology offered by the likes of Ubiquiti Networks (NASDAQ:UBNT), Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARUN), and most other networking companies. To industry insiders who understand why 802.11ac is an important step-up in the world of wireless networking though, they're apt to have also noticed ARUN has more effectively taken advantage of this technology paradigm shift than peers like UBNT and slower-moving CSCO have. Investors would be wise to take notice too.

    Another technology stock that insiders are active in here is Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT), which develops high-performance networking technology for service providers and enterprises. Insiders are buying this stock into big time strength, since shares are up a whopping 211% so far in 2013.

    Ubiquiti Networks has a market cap of $3.3 billion and an enterprise value of $3.4 billion. This stock trades at a fair valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 31.65 and a forward price-to-earnings of 18.48. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 100%, and for next year it's pegged at 13.2%. This is a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $279.73 million and its total debt is $74.89 million.

    A director just bought 20,000 shares, or about $737,000 worth of stock, at $36.85 per share.

    From a technical perspective, UBNT is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been trending sideways for the last month and change, with shares moving between $36.30 on the downside and $44.80 on the upside. Traders should keep an eye on shares of UBNT for any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range, since that could trigger a big breakout for this stock.

    If you're in the bull camp on UBNT, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support at $36.30 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $39.35 to $40.59 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 905,311 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then UBNT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $44.80 a share. Any high-volume move above $44.80 will then give UBNT a chance to tag $50 to $55 a share.

It combines a touchscreen and a traditional phone keypad, is equipped with a five megapixel camera, quad-band for voice calling and third generation (3G), high speed packet access (HSPA) and wireless fidelity (WiFi) connectivity for data in a bushed aluminum finish. Other additions to the Company�� portfolio included the Nokia C3 Touch & Type, a stainless steel device, which also combines the touch screen and traditional phone keypad, and the Nokia 2690, memory card slot, and which gives access to Ovi Mail and features an FM radio and video graphics array (VGA) camera. During 2010, the Company introduced a family of smartphones based on a new generation of the Symbian operating system. NAVTEQ Corporation (NAVTEQ) offers context and geographical services through Ovi Maps to a range of location-based services, such as pedestrian navigation, traffic and public transport information, local services and city guides, integration with social networks and contextual advertising. In January 2010, Nokia introduced a new version of Ovi Maps for its smartphones, which includes navigation to the user, and it is using NAVTEQ�� digital map information and related location-based content in this offering. This new version of Ovi Maps includes car and pedestrian navigation features, such as turn-by-turn voice guidance. During 2010, the Company�� NAVTEQ launched its new advanced mapping collection technology, NAVTEQ True. During 2010, its NAVTEQ launched Natural Guidance, a product to enable guidance in a human manner through the use of descriptive reference cues.

NAVTEQ�� map database enables the Company�� customers to offer navigation, route planning, location-based services and other geographic information-based products and services to con! sumer and! commercial users. NAVTEQ provides its database to mobile device and handset manufacturers, automobile manufacturers and dealers, navigation systems manufacturers, software developers, Internet portals, parcel and overnight delivery services companies and governmental and quasi- governmental entities, among others. The products and services incorporating NAVTEQ map data include Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Dynamic navigation, Route planning, Location-based services and Geographic information systems. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are in-vehicle applications that require geographic data, such as curve, slope, speed limits and highly detailed geometry. Dynamic navigation is real-time, detailed turn-by-turn route guidance, which can be provided to end-users through vehicle navigation systems, as well as through Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled handheld navigation devices, and other mobile devices.

Route planning consists of driving directions, route optimization and map display through services provided by Internet portals and through computer software for personal and commercial use. Location-based services include location-specific information services, providing information about people and places that is tailored to the proximity of the specific user. The applications using NAVTEQ�� map database include points of interest locators, mobile directory assistance services, emergency response systems and vehicle-based telematics services. Geographic information systems render geographic representations of information and assets for management analysis and decision making. Nokia Siemens Networks has three business units: network systems; global services; and business solutions. Nokia Siemens Networks is jointly owned by Nokia and Siemens.
