Top 10 Forestry Companies To Watch For 2014

The US Federal Reserve’s aggressive stimulus program was a last resort initiated five years ago in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to save the global financial system from collapse. Not just the Fed but central banks around the world took to pumping trillions of dollars into their economies.

The result has been to stabilize the system in the US, but it has reaped the unintended consequence of keeping firms artificially alive that should have been dead from bad business decisions. Think of these inherently weak firms as “corporate zombies.” It also created bubbles in various asset markets.

Moreover, during this period of Federal Reserve stimulus, US gross domestic product (GDP) growth has been tepid,  income inequality grew, labor participation fell, business investment slowed, and consumer demand was the weakest in the post World War II era.

We probably now face a period of imbalance, marked by either inflation or deflation. As such, investors should keep a balanced portfolio in the event of either scenario. In particular, high-quality energy utilities can protect your wealth if inflation’s insidious cousin, deflation, rears its ugly head.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Revolution Lightning Technologies (RVLT), which designs, manufactures, markets and sells, commercial grade, LED replacement lamps, LED fixtures and LED-based signage, channel-letter and contour lighting products. This stock has been a monster for the bulls so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 445%.

If you take a look at the chart for Revolution Lightning Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $2.19 to $2.22 a share. Following that bottom, shares of RVLT exploded to the upside and hit a recent high of $3.96 a share with strong upside volume flows. Shares of RVLT are now finding some buying interest right around its 50-day moving average of $3.36 a share. If that level can hold, then RVLT will set up to resume its uptrend and potentially trigger another big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in RVLT if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.70 to $3.80 a share and then above more resistance at $3.96 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.21 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RVLT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.94 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy RVLT off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average at $3.36 a share, or around $3 a share. One can also buy RVLT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Fifth & Pacific Cos.(FNP) is nearing a deal to sell its Lucky Brand denim business after an auction that had stalled regained momentum this fall, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Another up-and-coming competitor is Juicy Couture, a brand of Fifth and Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) , which plans to launch a new line of intimate apparel early next year. For Fifth and Pacific, getting Juicy Couture to perform better would mark the final step in its overall turnaround, with the company's other two major brands having already seen gains in comps recently.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Movado has put in place a number of lucrative partnerships, going beyond selling its own line of luxury watches by creating watch lines for other luxury retailers. By latching onto the success of fellow luxury retailers Coach (NYSE: COH  ) and the Juicy Couture division of Fifth & Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) , Movado ensures that it's able to get customers from multiple sources targeting different demographics.

  • [By Andrew Marder]

It looks like Juicy Couture and Lucky Brand have become too burdensome for Fifth and Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) to handle. The company is reportedly looking to sell off the brands, leaving its portfolio centered around the fast-rising Kate Spade brand. Lucky has had some success in the past year, though Juicy has languished, stuck with the velour tracksuits of yesterday. While Fifth and Pacific hasn't confirmed the rumors, the sale would make a lot of sense, and likely leave the company better off.
